12 MEET HAWAI‘I The Hawaiian Islands 855-313-4846 | paradisecopters.com Departing from Kona, Hilo, Lāna‘i, Turtle Bay, and Kapolei (West O‘ahu) The Travel Channel called it - “The Hottest Helicopter Ride on Earth!” The Travel Channel called it - “The Hottest Helicopter Ride on Earth!” ASK AN EXPERT WHAT VENUES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND AND WHY? We recommend venues which offer flexibility and impact and the MCI market often like their attendees to sense the exclusivity of each experience. The only official royal residence, ‘Iolani Palace, in Honolulu provides a variety of venues for interpretation - whether it be for a 4,000-person welcome reception or an awards celebration. Within the private nature reserve of Kualoa there are breathtaking venues. Numerous movies have been filmed here and the MCI market loves to incorporate such a venue into a program. Lastly, to leave one’s corporate mark in Hawai‘i flying by helicopter or driving in to Gunstock Ranch to plant trees in the company’s name leaves a legacy footprint. WHAT NEW PRODUCT OR EXPERIENCE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? Glamping at Kualoa Ranch. Amazing! WHAT IS THE MOST CREATIVE EVENT OR ACTIVITY YOU HAVE ORGANISED FOR A CLIENT? A James Bond-type experience to entertain guests on board a vessel as they headed out of Lāhainā Harbor to a submarine ride - complete with a tuxedo-clad parasailer, gunshots, a babe on a jet ski, high chase speed boats, the ‘bad guy’s’ boat going up in smoke, villains taking over the submarine, scuba divers, sticks of dynamite, Bond showing up to one of his soundtracks, an underwater dagger fight... and finally two martini glasses at a cocktail table dockside. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT OR RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE FOR GROUPS? We do not do a lot of restaurant experiences - we like to take that incredible chef off site to an incredible venue. Then guests really have a story to tell. WHAT GROUP ACTIVITIES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? Many incentive groups cater to ‘A’ type individuals who crave outdoor thrills such as ziplining, ATVing and kayaking. For groups that are more cerebral it’s fun to do a scavenger hunt with clues that connect participants with elements of Hawai‘i that only a local would know about. I always thought it would be fun to create an event adapting one of those ‘breakout rooms’ with all the clues being answered by experiences that everyone had over the first couple of days of the program - a great team-building activity that drives the memory deeper for each participant. WHAT VOLUNTEERING ACTIVITY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? As well as tree planting at Gunstock Ranch we like to do beach clean-up because it helps the environment and wildlife and gets everyone out of the meeting room and gets the trade wind into their hair. If you do it at a special beach that is not so common to go to then you also have the added element of exploring a more unique part of the island. WHY SHOULD ATTENDEES VISIT MORE THAN ONE ISLAND? Visiting more than one island is easy. A quick hop on a plane or helicopter for a day trip or start your trip on one island and end on another. Each island is truly so unique that the experiences will be completely different. I revere O‘ahu as the quintessential, ‘have your cake and eat it too’ experience - city life, night life, shopping, quaint little towns, beautiful beaches. Maui is the retreat for many MCI groups, with manicured resorts and beautiful scenery. The Big Island comes in next with similar options. Both of these islands have many fine resorts, sights to see and activities to incorporate. Philip Richardson, an innovative event producer for event planning and production company Current Affairs, shares his insider knowledge. WHY IS HAWAI‘I A GREAT DESTINATION FOR MICE (MEETINGS, INCENTIVES, CONFERENCES AND EVENTS)? The diversity, culture, weather and landscape. The representation of our multi-ethnic population is brought to life in entertainment, food, fashion, art and cultural practices, yet common ground is found in the spirit of our Aloha.
